A Pilot’s Field Guide to the Northern California Coast with Michelle Veloso
Ever wonder how big a whale is compared to a plane?
Join us for an immersive look at the incredible marine ecosystem just beyond the Golden Gate Bridge. From seals, whales, and sharks, to the thousands of seabirds that call the Farallon Islands home, the waters below our flight paths are part of an interconnected ecosystem.
Our speaker, Michelle Veloso, is a Northern California pilot, flight instructor, and Aviation Partnership Specialist with the Seabird Protection Network. Michelle will explore the National Marine Sanctuaries in our backyard, with a particular focus on sensitive nesting areas, and the role pilots play in protecting these special places.
This will be more than a presentation. Meet Fran, a 46-foot life-sized inflatable whale, and take the opportunity to step inside to get a sense of just how massive these animals are. Participants will also have the chance to use VR headsets to explore the underwater world of Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuary and experience the Common Murre colony of the Farallon Islands.
Whether you regularly fly along the California coast or simply want to discover more about the incredible world beneath your wings, come see what’s out there, and learn how we can become better stewards of the waters we fly over.
